US attorney general Michael Mukasey collapsed and lost consciousness while giving a speech on national security, the US justice department has said.

Mr Mukasey, 67, was taken to a hospital for treatment, where his spokesman said he was conscious and alert.

The former federal judge has been the top US law enforcement official for about a year.

The attorney general was giving an address to the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy at a hotel in Washington at the time he collapsed.

He was looked after by members of his own security detail until an ambulance arrived to take him to George Washington University Hospital.

"The attorney general is conscious, conversant and alert," said justice department spokesman Peter Carr. He said Mr Mukasey would stay overnight at the hospital for observation.

Very strange. I think he was hit by some kind of secret weapon, like a specially tuned noise gun, because he was perfectly healthy when he started shaking uncontrollably.

On November 20, 2008, during a speech to the Federalist Society, Mukasey had "a fainting spell" caused by a late-night speech given under hot stage lights. Mukasey was released the next day after tests seemed to rule out a stroke or heart attack. Doctors characterized him as "very fit." - wiki

With each new administration there are changes in power and reminders are sometimes sent regarding who still pulls the strings.
