One dead as teens rush farmers market

ny169.jpgAs many as 50 teenagers, armed with knives, bats and belts, rushed a farmers market in New York's Union Square, killing a teen and injuring two others.

Police said Taishawn Bellevue, 17, of Brooklyn, was stabbed to death and two other teens were injured during the afternoon melee that sent shoppers running for cover behind Christmas trees and vendors' counters, the New York Daily News said Thursday. The brawl may have originated as a dispute at a nearby high school, officials said.

"You saw hands and fists flying. One girl with a burgundy coat was beating someone with a cane," Derwin Hannah, a book vendor, told the Daily News. "Innocent people were locked in against the tables." - upi
